Every year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is inviting film industries of different countries to submit their best film for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in Oscars. The said award category has been created since 1956.
Philippines’ official entry to the 85th Academy Awards (2013 Oscars) Best Foreign Language Film category is the indie film Bwakaw which stars Eddie Garcia (a 75 year old lonely gay) who cares for a stray dog named Princess.
The said comedy-drama film written and directed by Jun Robles Lana was chosen by the Film Academy of the Philippines special committee to be the country's representative to the prestigious Oscar Awards.
Bwakaw got a lot of nominations and award here and abroad such as winning the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival for Audience Award (Directors Showcase (Jun Lana), Balanghai Trophy (Best Actor - Directors Showcase (Eddie Garcia), and NETPAC Award (Directors Showcase (Jun Lana).
International events nomination in Hawaii International Film Festival for the “Halekulani Golden Orchid Award” (Narrative Feature (Jun Lana), and winning the Tokyo International Film Festival “Asian Film Award - Special Mention” (Jun Lana).
Part of the cast members are Rez Cortez, Soxie Topacio, Gardo Versoza, Beverly Salviejo, Armida Siguion-Reyna, Bibeth Orteza, Joey Paras, Luz Valdez, and Alan Paule, Bwakaw was distributed by Star Cinema last September 5, 2012.
